Is there a way to download YouTube videos so I can access them on my iPod? Is it safe?
There are a couple of ways to download YouTube videos, but because you also want to copy these online videos to your iPod Touch, you need a program that downloads and converts them for you.
One free program is called YouTube Downloader (YouTubeDownload.AlterVista.org) from BienneSoft, which also works with other sites that host videos, including Facebook and Vodpod. After you install it, simply copy and paste the Web address (URL) from a YouTube video into the YouTube Downloader window. Then select where on your hard drive you want to save the .flv video file. Some people store new downloads on their desktop, and others use the default C:\Downloads directory Windows provides -- either is fine as long as you remember where you stored it.
Once the YouTube clip is downloaded to your hard drive, you can watch it on your computer. But for viewing on an iPod Touch, there's one final step to take. Convert it to a video file for viewing on an iPod touch (the best option is .MP4). Within seconds, you'll see the new file on your hard drive, which means it’s ready for copying.
Is it safe? Yes -- it's been tested to be spyware-free by Download.com -- but keep in mind that you'll see some options when installing this program. It may ask whether you want to add a YouTube Downloader toolbar to your browser or if you'd like to change your default search engine to Yahoo.com. Be sure you read about optional software or browser changes before clicking those boxes.
