Behavior


Adware.Annoyance is a program that lets a user send many Yahoo! IM messages to another person. It also modifies the user's Yahoo! settings to display an advertisement from the program author.

When Adware.Annoyance is executed, it does the following:
  1. Modifies the value:

    "Chat Adurl"="about:<body bgcolor=#E0DFE3>Ad cleared by<a href=http:/ /www.tha-paradise.org target=new>Tha-Paradise>/a>. Check Us"

    in the registry key:

    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Yahoo\Pager\yurl

  2. Modifies the value:

    "Change Room Banner"="about:<body bgcolor=#E0DFE3>Ad cleared by<a href=http:/ /www.tha-paradise.org target=new>Tha-Paradise>/a>. Check Us"

    in the registry key:

    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Yahoo\Pager\yurl

  3. Runs a program that lets a user bombard someone else with Yahoo! IM messages.



The following instructions pertain to all Symantec antivirus products that support Security Risk detection.
  1. Update the definitions.
  2. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as Adware.Annoyance.
  3. Restore the values, which were modified in the registry, to their initial values.
For specific details on each of these steps, read the following instructions.

1. Updating the definitions
To obtain the most recent definitions, start your Symantec program and run LiveUpdate.

2. Scanning for and deleting the files
  1. Start your Symantec antivirus program, and then run a full system scan.
  2. If any files are detected as Adware.Annoyance, click Delete.


    Note: If your Symantec antivirus product reports that it cannot delete a detected file, write down the path and file name. Then use Windows Explorer to locate and delete the file.

3. Restoring the values in the registry

WARNING: Symantec strongly recommends that you back up the registry before making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify the specified keys only. Read the document, "How to make a backup of the Windows registry ," for instructions.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run. (The Run dialog box appears.)

  2. Type regedit

    Then click OK. (The Registry Editor opens.)

  3. Navigate to the key:

    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Yahoo\Pager\yurl

  4. In the right pane, restore the initial value of the setting:

    "Chat Adurl"="about:<body bgcolor=#E0DFE3>Ad cleared by<a href=http://www.tha-paradise.org target=new>Tha-Paradise>/a>. Check Us"

  5. In the right pane, restore the initial value of the setting:

    "Change Room Banner"="about:<body bgcolor=#E0DFE3>Ad cleared by<a href=http://www.tha-paradise.org target=new>Tha-Paradise>/a>. Check Us"

  6. Exit the Registry Editor.
