Behavior


Adware.Lamhok opens a Web page every time an unidentified Unified Resource Locator (URL) is typed into the Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer address bars.

When Adware.Lamhok is executed, it registers itself as the default protocol handler in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer. When any request is passed to this protocol handler, it displays a specific Web page.

This action causes that Web page to be displayed when Internet Explorer attempts to access a URL that does not begin with a known moniker. Examples of known monikers include:
  • http:
  • ftp:
  • mailto:



The following instructions pertain to all Symantec antivirus products that support Security Risk detection.
  1. Update the definitions.
  2. Run a full system scan and note all the files detected as Adware.Lamhok.
  3. Unregister the dll files, and then restart the computer.
  4. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as Adware.Lamhok.
For specific details on each of these steps, read the following instructions.

1. To update the definitions
To obtain the most recent definitions, start your Symantec program and run LiveUpdate.


2. To scan for and note the files detected as Adware.Lamhok
  1. Start your Symantec antivirus program, and then run a full system scan.
  2. If any files are detected as Adware.Lamhok, note their names and locations. Do not try to delete them at this time.

3. To unregister the dll files, restart the computer
  1. Click Start > Run. (The Run dialog box appears.)
  2. Type the following text, including the quotes. Substitute the path and file name of any .dll file detected as Adware.Lamhok, where shown:

    regsvr32 /u "<path and file name of any .dll file detected as Adware.Lamhok"

    and then click OK.

  3. If a dialog box confirming this action appears, click OK.
  4. Restart the computer.

4. To scan for and delete the files detected as Adware.Lamhok
  1. Start your Symantec antivirus program, and then run a full system scan.
  2. Delete any files detected as Adware.Lamhok.

    Note: If your Symantec antivirus product reports that it cannot delete a detected file, write down the path and file name. Then use Windows Explorer to locate and delete the file.
