The glossary below contains many of the terms you will find in common use throughout the Symantec Security Response website. Please refer to this list to find definitions of terms and answers to other Internet security-related questions.

partition

In Backup Exec, a grouping of slots in a robotic library for use in Backup Exec operations.

A divided part of a hard disk. An operating system sees a partition as a separate disk if it recognizes the file system.

A portion of a physical disk that functions as though it were a physically separate disk. Partitions can be created only on basic disks. Partitions cannot span disks; they must be contiguous regions. When a basic disk that contains partitions is upgraded to a dynamic disk, the partitions become simple volumes on the dynamic disk.

The logical areas into which a disk is divided.

The standard division of a physical disk device, as supported directly by the operating system and disk drives.
