Norton VPN brings Split Tunneling to Mac

VPNs are great for privacy — until they get in the way. Maybe your banking app won’t connect, your printer disappears, or you need lightning-fast internet for online gaming. Split Tunneling gives you the best of both worlds, letting you choose which apps and websites use the VPN and which connect without it. Now, Norton VPN users on Mac can enjoy the same flexibility already available on Windows and Android.

What Split Tunneling does

Split Tunneling is a VPN feature that lets you choose which internet traffic is routed through the encrypted VPN tunnel and which connects directly to the internet. This contrasts with the default Norton VPN setting, where all the internet data you send and receive is encrypted and transmitted via a secure VPN server.

While full-funnel encryption maximizes privacy, it can sometimes cause issues with apps, websites, or devices that work better with a direct internet connection.

For example:

  • Your banking app may block logins from VPN IP addresses.
  • A streaming service could block or restrict content when it detects VPN usage.
  • Your printer, smart TV, or smart speaker may become harder to access on your local network.
  • An online game may perform better with a lower ping connection to its servers.

By letting you choose which apps and websites use the VPN and which connect directly to the internet, Split Tunneling gives you greater control over your connection. This allows you to keep sensitive activities protected by the VPN while ensuring trusted apps, websites, and devices continue to work optimally.

What’s new for Mac users

Previously, Norton VPN for Mac didn’t support Split Tunneling. If you needed a specific app, browser, or website to bypass the VPN, your only option was to disconnect the VPN entirely and reconnect it when you were done.

With Split Tunneling, that clunky workaround is gone. You can now:

  • Exclude specific apps from the VPN tunnel, such as banking apps, smart-home controllers, or work tools.
  • Enable specific websites to connect directly to the internet, which is useful for location-aware services and other sites that don't work well with VPN traffic.
  • Keep the VPN active for everything else, ensuring that any traffic you haven't excluded remains encrypted and protected.

Existing subscribers will get Split Tunneling automatically with the latest Norton VPN app update. Getting started takes just a few clicks: open the app, go to Settings, scroll to Connection settings, and customize Split Tunneling to fit your needs.

“With Split Tunneling now available on Norton VPN for Mac, our customers have full control over which apps and websites travel through the VPN and which stay on their everyday connection — bringing Mac users the same flexibility we already offer on Windows and Android, all backed by the trusted protection Norton VPN is built to deliver.” — Himmat Bains, Product Lead, Norton VPN
